When pets were added in The Sims 4 Dogs and Cats, we were given the opportunity to really give our dogs and cats their own personalities and characteristics that will change the way they behave and the interactions we can have with them.

Each pet can have three different traits that you can choose if you are doing them in CAS, or they can be randomised, just like the traits in the simulation. If you decide to adopt a stray pet or a pet from services, you cannot choose your pet's traits, so it may be more difficult to care for it.

These pet traits can make your pet have different autonomous interactions and do different things, they also make your pet react differently to your sim's interactions with them! Some traits conflict with each other, e.g. a dog cannot be both independent and loyal.

Dog traits

Active

"These dogs are very energetic. They like to run a lot and go for frequent walks".

This trait is in conflict with the teledependent, which means that you cannot have both traits. These dogs will need a walk much more often and will do better when they have access to the outdoors to run. They do not do as well in flats.

Adventurous

"These dogs sometimes leave home to go on adventures on their own, but they are also happy to go on an adventure with their owner."

These dogs love to spend their time outdoors and explore the world. They are a little more likely to run away if they are not caught enough, because they are adventurous and want to see the world.

Aggressive

"These dogs will be more hostile when greeting others and may attack others if not properly trained."

This pet trait is in conflict with the friendly trait and these dogs are anything but friendly. You need to train some of the aggression if you want your dog to be a little more relaxed, which you can do by teaching him his negative behaviours.

Couch Potato

"These dogs are low-energy creatures who like to relax and unwind with their owners rather than run around."
These dogs prefer to spend time sleeping or lying on the sofa. Their favourite thing is when their owner clicks on them and uses the relaxation interaction to lie down so that they can spend some time on the couch. This trait is in conflict with the active trait.

Friendly

"These animals tend to be friendly to other Sims and will happily greet other Sims around them."
This pet trait conflicts with the aggressive pet trait and these pets are my favourite. They are more willing to greet strangers and have adorable interactions that they will do with children.

Wolverine

"These animals will eat much more often and in a much more disordered way!"
These animals love to eat and will literally eat all the time, so you will have to spend more money to make sure they are happy. A greedy pet loves it when you feed it from your plate and you can even give it a really great gift to make it happy.

Hairy

"These dogs will leave piles of hair lying around. Brush their fur to keep things tidy! "
Furry dogs are very messy and if you're not proactive with your pet and brush them at least once a day, you'll end up with piles of hair in the house. This can be useful if you have the NanoCan touchless bin, as you can earn money from your pet's hair or if you have the robot hoover to deal with the mess.

Hunter

"These dogs are natural hunters. Send them out into the world and they will hunt things. "

A dog with a hunter's trait is great for anyone trying to finish the collector's aspiration because it will carry small boxes full of gifts for your sims and are often rarer.

Independent

"These dogs are less likely to need constant affection and can even walk on their own".

This trait of the pet is in conflict with the loyal trait. These pets can essentially take care of themselves, will go out and walk alone and spend very little time with their owners.

Jumpy

"These dogs are easily frightened and like to hide more often. They will often avoid things like fights".

These dogs will be frightened by things like fireworks or thunderstorms if you have installed seasons. They might even hide under the bed!

Loyal

"These dogs want to be closer to their owners and like to be cuddled. They like to follow their owners. "

A dog with the loyal pet trait is less likely to run away because it wants to be at its owners' side as often as possible. They will become sad if they do not spend enough time with their owners!

Playful

"These animals love toys and want to play all the time, even when they are not excited."

These dogs really want to be played with all the time. They love toys and will bring a ball to play with much more often than other dogs.

Investigator

"These dogs are naturally more curious and like to investigate different objects in the house."

A pet detective will love looking around the house, and especially being a detective on the outside. They spend more time questioning things and really want to know how things work.

Smart

"These bright dogs are easier to train and learn tricks quickly. They might even understand simlish! "

Any dog that has the intelligent trait of the lot is the easiest to train and you can get him to do all kinds of tricks and run through obstacle courses.

Stubborn

"These dogs don't like being told what to do. Scolding them doesn't do much to change their misbehaviour, but you can try begging them to stop.

Dogs with the stubborn pet trait will rarely listen when you tell them what to do, are more resistant to pet training and will also be more annoying when you take them for a walk.

Planters

"These dogs never do any good. They often misbehave and can even be encouraged to do so".

These dogs are more likely to knock over a bin and make a mess in puddles. They absolutely love to do the opposite of what your sim tells them to do.

Vocal

"These dogs like to howl from time to time and can even sing on command."

These dogs bark constantly and make a lot of noise, which can keep your sims awake in the middle of the night if you do not discourage these behaviours.

Cat traits

Affectionate

"These cats really love their owners. They will try to be there for them whenever possible. "

These cats will spend so much time next to your sim and will love it when you give them love. You can also earn satisfaction points after doing many loving interactions with your cat, using the interaction feel love +250.

Detached

"These cats don't really need their owners, they're just here for the free food."

Cats with this pet trait will essentially ignore your sim and act as if they do not even exist. This trait conflicts with the affectionate trait.

Smart

"These cats learn quickly and some say they can even understand the simplistic."

These cats are much easier to train and can learn different skills more quickly. A great pet trait to have!

Curious

"These cats are most curious about their surroundings. They like to look for different objects in the house. "

An inquisitive cat will spend more time investigating things around him and will do so for most of the day. He is rather cute!

Soft

"These cats are softer than normal. They hack the hairballs more often. "

Fluffy cats are the messiest of the bunch because they always leave hairballs behind. This is great if you have the Touchless NanoCan basket because you can earn money from the hair!

Free spirit

"These cats enjoy wandering around the world, almost as if they were wild animals. But don't worry, they will always come home for food. "

Free-spirited cats are not seen around much, they will be out for hours or even days at a time. They usually come home, get some food and say hello, but don't expect them to be a house cat.

Friendly

"These animals tend to be friendly to other Sims and will happily greet other Sims around them."

Friendly cats are much more likely to welcome strangers and can get along with all the people they meet. This trait is in conflict with the territorial pet trait.

Frisky

"These cats are more active than other cats. They really like to jump and run. "

The lively trait of the pet obviously conflicts with lazy! These pets are more likely to jump over tables and counters and will run much more than other cats.

Wolverine

"These pets are going to be a lot thicker and a lot messier!"

A cat with the trait of a gluttonous pet will always be in its bowl. They love receiving treats and will cost you much more to feed than other cats.

Lazy

"These cats really like their catnips. They are also less likely to jump from place to place as it requires too much effort. "

Cats with a lazy trait will spend much more time sleeping and lying down. They absolutely love it when their owner lies down on the sofa with them. This pet trait is in conflict with the lively trait.

Malicious

"These cats never do any good. They often misbehave and can even be encouraged to do so".

A mischievous cat is more likely to ruin your furniture by scratching and play in the rubbish if it is around.

Playful

"These animals love toys and want to play all the time, even when they are not excited."

There is nothing a playful cat loves more than playing with a laser pointer, and this also gives your sim a happy moodlet!

Prowler

"These cats enjoy wandering around the neighbourhood. Send them out and they might come back with something they found. "

These cats are great if you are working on the collector's aspiration, because they will bring home collectibles in little boxes for your sims. They will go on adventures alone in the neighbourhood for hours.

Skittish

"These cats are afraid of everything. Okay, well, almost everything. They also like to hide. "

Cats with the shady trait of pets will be afraid of strangers, frightened of loud noises and frightened of many things in the house. You will often find them under your bed.

Spoiled

"These cats are spoilt creatures. Scolding them hardly ever changes their behaviour".

Spoilt cats are really hard to train, and even if you tell them to stop doing certain things, they will probably continue to do so. They love to be cuddled.

Loquacious

"These cats love to scream together with other Sims. They will even try to sing if requested. "

Cats with the chatty pet trait will be noisy all the time. This means that they will interrupt you while you are napping or sleeping, wake up your children and are generally annoying.

Territorial

"These cats are quite protective of their territory. They will be aggressive with anyone they meet again."

These cats will not easily let strangers into the house, they do not want other people in their space!

Final thoughts

Having specific pet traits in The Sims 4 is very important as we can't control our pets, so it helps make them more interesting to play with! What are your favourite pet traits? Let me know in the comments!
