Take them with you on your journey as an enchanter to protect you and help you collect talent points. They'll also cheer you on when you've learned something new.

What are the advantages of having a Familiars
You can summon any familiar attached to you. Familiars will protect you from death and will earn you extra talent points if they are summoned when you level up. When a familiar is active, your Sim will also have a safe state of mind.
Enchanted children can also obtain a familiar and summon them! The advantage that your Sim's children gain from having a familiar around them is that they will protect the child from death.
